Tour Description

Join us on a colourful journey into the history, lifestyle and unique character of the Peranakan Babas (the men) and the Nonyas (the women)...

Wander through the bustling enclaves of Katong & Joo Chiat, that showcases the rich and baroque Peranakan architecture. Admire rows of colorful traditional shop houses that date back to the 1920's and 1930's.

Next we will proceed to the Peranakan Museum. The Peranakan Museum at 39 Armenian Street, which houses the world's finest and most comprehensive collection of Peranakan artefacts, is the latest addition to the National Heritage Board's family of museums. It will operate under the Asian Civilizations Museum (ACM). The Peranakan Musuem presents a Southeast Asian-wide view of the Peranakan culture. Its rich material legacy and heritage are enhanced by state-of-the-art display technology, coupled with educational interactives for the young.

The Peranakan Museum explores the main themes of Peranakan life in ten permanent galleries. They include the elaborate 12-day Peranakan wedding, the role of the Nonyas, the prominent Peranakans in Singapore's history, as well as one of the favourite past times of Singaporeans - food and feasting. It also provides a glimpse of how modern-day Peranakans have evolved with their culture.

National Orchid Garden, located on the highest hill in the Singapore Botanic Gardens, now boasts a sprawling display of 60,000 orchid plants comprising 400 species and more than 2,000 hybrids. It offers a permanent showcase of the largest display of tropical orchids in the world. The distinctive feature of the National Orchid Garden is its design concept which presents the display of plants in four separate colour zones over most of its areas: the "spring" zone with its prevailing colours of bright and lively shades of gold, yellow and creams; the "summer" zone with its major tones of strong reds and pinks; the "autumn" zone of matured shades; and the "winter" zone of whites and cool blues. The colour zonation is achieved by a careful blend of selected trees, shrubs, herbs and orchids (mostly hybrids) with matching foliage and floral colours. The National Orchid Garden is definitely one of the best places to visit for the young and old, and generally for people from all walks of life!
